In 1998, I had a very severe car accident that caused disc herniations in my lower back. I had significant pain in my back and legs for almost five years. I availed myself of: chiropractic, PT, massage, acupuncture, biofeedback, meditation, medications, counseling, epidural injections, and even laser disc surgery. Finally, the pain and disabilities subsided.
I was fine until late October 2008. By the end of the year I was barely able to sit for more than several seconds and I lost more than two months of work. I was seriously contemplating open back surgery, which was recommended by all who were treating me, even my chiropractor.
My regular chiropractor is fantastic ("a chiropractor's chiropractor") but with this exacerbation, his treatments were only temporarily helpful. I finally decided to see my mentor who is the best living chiropractor I know. I hadn’t seen him initially, because he’s been retired for some time. The most dramatic difference in his care is that he is much more specific in his approach. That’s what made the difference for me, and this experience has enabled my growth as a practitioner. It reminded me that patients who are not getting optimal results can by seeking better chiropractic care. In my case, I avoided possibly debilitating back surgery.
Chiropractic, properly applied, really does work! Although I was already quite specific in my technique, I have become even more so. And as with every physical challenge I’ve faced, I emerged a better doctor.
