I was born in Thailand and came to China Town, New York in 1984 with my parents. I have not been back to Thailand since. When I moved to NY, my boyfriend was still in college in Thailand, and so he came one year after I arrived. We were married right away and soon had two children while we were living in NY. I learned to speak English by working in a coffee shop in NY.
In 1997, we moved to Brookline because we wanted our kids to be educated here rather than in NY schools. We opened Dok Bua in 1997 as a Thai grocery store. After 1 1/2 years, we realized that the business would improve if half of the store operated as a restaurant. The restaurant became so popular that now Dok Bua is solely a restaurant.
My whole family works here. My daughter, Nitita is 22 and attends Bentley College, and my son Ben is 19. They each work here as a cashier two nights per week. My husband is here all week and after 10 years, I finally get two days off each week!
My favorite part about running Dok Bua has been watching how it has grown. Since 2003, we have had 100% growth each year, and now finally, after waiting 10 years, we were voted Best of Boston 2007 for Best Thai Restaurant of the more than 200 Thai restaurants in Boston.
