Booksmith has been in business in Coolidge Corner for 46 years. From the beginning, the mission has been to be involved in the community while providing great selection, service and style. Many are the incarnations of accomplishing that mission since Marshall and Judy Smith opened their first store. Today, Booksmith is still bustling with activity. Our offerings have grown to include used books, author events, online sales and a website, a card & gift room, and a video store. Our involvement in the community is a huge part of what we do, whether it's sitting on a nonprofit board, donating time, money or goods, or sponsoring events.
I've just celebrated my 27th year as manager. Besides all that's mentioned above, I'm very proud of the incredible cast of booksellers who've worked here over the years. Someone once said I'm the curator of the staff, making sure it's an eclectic, book-passionate group. We've seen booksellers marry and have kids, leave and come back, become successful in publishing or be published authors. Russell Banks once worked here, for example!
Before this job, I managed a chain store. The difference between that and Booksmith, I've always said, is like babysitting compared to having your own children. I'm still learning and loving it. For an English major who didn't want to teach, this has been a dream job. Colleagues in the world of independent bookselling are a generous and stellar group. And Brookline is the best community imaginable to support a great bookstore. As I said, it's a dream job!
